Looks like Jen and I are headed to Copper Sunday for what could be our last day this year. It has been dumping up there, so it should be fun.

Congratulations to Bode Miller and Lindsey Vonn on their World Cup Overall titles, and to Todd Ligety for his World Cup GS title. A proud week for US skiers.

Union Meadows at Copper (by Chester Bullock)As mentioned, we went to Copper Mountain yesterday. The conditions were fantastic. Not quite a powder day (1″ new in the prior 24 hours), but the sun was out (even though the day started at ~ 8°F) and there was plenty of snow on the hill. Started our day out at Union Creek since we have an out of town guest who has never been on the snow before. If you have never been, Copper is probably the best beginners area around (at least in my opinion) and Union Creek is the perfect place for them. The “H” lift (they call it Highpoint now) is one of the oldest and slowest ones there, but it’s all good. We took that up into the basin served by Timberline Express and did some laps off T-Rex. We were also with another family, and decided to split up so the boys could go see some different stuff.
We headed up the Rendezvous lift to the saddle that connects the front side of Copper with Copper Bowl and the Tucker Mountain access. Views were great (see my Flickr pics here and here). I just wanted to show the new people around, so we didn’t really ski the bowl area. Made me think back to the days before the lifts went in and one day in particular when I was in there on a snowcat - good times! Anyhow, after we rode the Mountain Chief out of the bowl, we did the trails around Union Meadows and Golddigger. Good stuff over there, and I hadn’t skiied it in years. The steeps are pretty steep in Union Meadows, and the narrowness combined with trees and bumps makes me feel like I am in the Alleys at A-Basin. Lots of fun, and not many people get over there. I highly recommend it.
All in all we had a really good time, and even though we left at ~4pm, the traffic wasn’t too bad - certainly have seen worse. We had such a good time in fact, that we are thinking Copper might be where we get our passes next season. I am all for this, I need to get back in that snowcat again. :)

I don’t understand. Yesterday I woke up, got online, and saw 0″ of new snow being reported at Breckenridge. Got there around 8:30 or so, and the message board next to the gondola said 3.5″ of new. Whats the deal? I know they didn’t get 3.5″ of snow between 5:30am and 8:30am. That kind of thing is rare, and we didn’t drive through anything on the way there that would have qualified for such a big snowfall amount. Is it really that hard to get this stuff right?

Back to skiing. 3.5″ on the board = 6-10″ on the wind-protected faces of Imperial Express and Chair 6. All that snow blows over the ridge and falls right into the bowl area of Peak 8. And that is where we went to play. Lot’s of fun. We had a really good day, hope you were able to make it. Looks like we are headed to Copper Mountain on Sunday. Haven’t been there for a while, guess I am due. We’ll see if the parking situation has improved at all…

OK sports fans, the next KBPI “Hump Day Hookie” is NEXT Wednesday, March 5 at Breckenridge. I’ll be there. Could be my last day of the season. Taking the boat in to the shop today to get the last repairs done to have it ready for spring and summer.

You can now get 2 for 1 Loveland lift tickets any day left this year by being a Mountain Sports Club member (cost is about $6). Get more information.

Seems like the season has really just started rocking and rolling, and I am already seeing articles in the local papers about when the resorts are going to be closing. Not many of them are moving off their scheduled dates, which is unfortunate. I hate when Easter comes early, it just makes the problem worse.

I am experimenting with the addition of YouTube video to this site, to go along with the flickr images and other things I have been trying. Haven’t gotten to the CDFOT road stuff yet (bigger project than expected), but I am still going to do something with it. In the meantime, go check out a video.

It’s a powder hounds worst nightmare - complete powder day (12″ at A-Basin and Vail, 11″ at Breck) and I-70 is closed. Ouch. Glad I got my powder day in on Wednesday.

FYI - MM248 is BEAVER BROOK • Floyd Hill. Here is a handy guide to Colorado milemarkers (PDF format).
